Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 438-449 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0076-4

Abstract: This paper investigates the staying and moving characteristics of office workers in a non-territorial office using an ultra wide band (UWB) impulse radio sensor network. The differences between office workers’ staying and moving are clarified according to the individual workstation type that they select. The study determines the characteristics of each type of workstation. By clarifying office workers’ preference for staying and moving with regard to individual workstation types and office worker post, the reasons why office workers in different posts tended to select different types of workstations were revealed. Specifically, leaders tended to select workstations at the “inner meeting corner side” most frequently, as they had a greater need to stay in other areas. In contrast, ordinary staff needed to visit office workers in other areas less often, and as such, they tended to select individual workstations at the “middle meeting corner side.” Barring this, they tended to select individual workstations at the “middle corridor side” or “outer-meeting corner side.” Temporary staff members had little need to visit or stay at other places so they tended to select individual workstations at the “window side,” which is seldom visited or stayed at by other office workers and they could be disturbed less often from their solo work.

Grasp Planning and Visual Servoing for an Outdoors Aerial Dual Manipulator Article

Pablo Ramon-Soria, Begoña C. Arrue, Anibal Ollero

Engineering 2020, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 77-88 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.11.003

Abstract:

This paper describes a system for grasping known objects with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provided with dual manipulators using an RGB-D camera. Aerial manipulation remains a very challenging task. This paper covers three principal aspects for this task: object detection and pose estimation, grasp planning, and in-flight grasp execution. First, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to obtain clues regarding the object’s position. Next, an alignment algorithm is used to obtain the object’s six-dimensional (6D) pose, which is filtered with an extended Kalman filter. A three-dimensional (3D) model of the object is then used to estimate an arranged list of good grasps for the aerial manipulator. The results from the detection algorithm—that is, the object’s pose—are used to update the trajectories of the arms toward the object. If the target poses are not reachable due to the UAV’s oscillations, the algorithm switches to the next feasible grasp. This paper introduces the overall methodology, and provides the experimental results of both simulation and real experiments for each module, in addition to a video showing the results.

Attributes, challenges and future directions of community resilience

Bo MENG, Nan LI, Dongping FANG

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2018, Volume 5, Issue 3,   Pages 307-323 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2018030

Abstract:

With the continuous development of human society, the damage to the natural environment is becoming increasingly large, causing crisis events to occur frequently. In recent years, the study of community resilience is becoming popular among scholars because of its perspective on disaster prevention and mitigation. In this study, we apply database retrieval to untangle community resilience-related papers from multiple directions. We analyze the connotation, attribute, and composition of community, resilience, and community resilience comprehensively by summarizing important issues and research progress in community resilience. Challenges and shortcomings faced by community resilience development are also determined. Moreover, we put forward the research directions that future research can focus on. Through literature review, current research on community resilience focuses on the following aspects: “infrastructure construction,” “crowd in the community,” “economic resilience,” “social capital,” and “measurement of community resilience.” Such research is not yet systematic and relatively decentralized. The attention to collective resilience in the community is relatively weak, which makes achieving the goal of “people-oriented and systematic control” difficult. Therefore, this study states that the development of future community resilience should stand from the perspective of “system of system” and build on knowledge and tools of various relevant domains. Therefore, public needs and participation are highlighted as breakthrough points. The research should integrate infrastructure and economic resilience, social resource allocation, network connection, and other aspects to build a holistic and functional resilient community.

NLWSNet: a weakly supervised network for visual sentiment analysis in mislabeled web images

Luo-yang Xue, Qi-rong Mao, Xiao-hua Huang, Jie Chen,mao_qr@ujs.edu.cn

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2020, Volume 21, Issue 9,   Pages 1267-1412 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900618

Abstract: Large-scale datasets are driving the rapid developments of deep convolutional neural networks for . However, the annotation of large-scale datasets is expensive and time consuming. Instead, it is easy to obtain weakly labeled web images from the Internet. However, noisy labels still lead to seriously degraded performance when we use images directly from the web for training networks. To address this drawback, we propose an end-to-end network, which is robust to mislabeled web images. Specifically, the proposed attention module automatically eliminates the distraction of those samples with incorrect labels by reducing their attention scores in the training process. On the other hand, the special-class activation map module is designed to stimulate the network by focusing on the significant regions from the samples with correct labels in a approach. Besides the process of feature learning, applying regularization to the classifier is considered to minimize the distance of those samples within the same class and maximize the distance between different class centroids. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations on well- and mislabeled web image datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the related methods.
